The exhibition on the third floor of the Pera Museum today, entitled The Hippodrome / Atmeydani: A Stage for Istanbul's History is predominantly a project made possible by the devoted efforts of the Ottoman and Republic Period research departments of the Istanbul Research Institute.

The Hippodrome was one of the biggest and most important structures of Byzantine Istanbul. Atmeydani, on the other hand, became one of the most important and lively public spaces of Ottoman Istanbul. We are happy to honor this very special and colorful square of Istanbul, which has hosted a variety of consequential incidents during the foundation of the Republic, with this exhibition that opens in 2010, the year Istanbul becomes the Culture Capital of Europe.

The Hippodrome /Atmeydani: A Stage for Istanbul's History exhibition almost rebuilds the magnificent Hippodrome decorated with exceptionally beautiful monuments and the Atmeydani of the Ottoman period, and examines the life surrounding them; we hope it will receive the interest it deserves from scientific and artistic circles, and would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all individuals and institutions who have contributed to this project.
