The first irrigation canals, reservoirs and dams in eastern Turkey were constructed by the Urartian state in the first half of the first millenium BC. The first millenium was a turning point for the Eastern Anatolian Region where up until that time the main economic source had been herding. From this time on we know that agriculture took centre stage. The many dams, reservoirs and watering systems are proof of the modern and succesful agriculture that ensued.
