Today, over six hundred years after the founding of the Ottoman Principality, we know only a handful of names of the individuals who assisted in the formation of what over time was to become the mighty Ottoman Empire. Of these, none was more important than the individual known as Hacı and Gazi Evrenos. He first appeared at the side of Süleyman Sah (the eldest son of the second Ottoman ruler Orhan), in the mid-1350s after the latter led the first Ottoman troops across the Dardanelles and into southeastern Europe. For the following half century Evrenos was the driving force behind the Ottoman conquest of what today is Greece.
