This book covers the Bronze Age strata of the excavations at Üçtepe Mound in the Upper Tigris Valley held from 1988 to 1992. The excavated areas are very small compared to the gigantic size of the mound but cultural strata from the 3rd millennium BC through the Roman period were attested in the short five-season long excavations. Uctepe can be said to have been an administrative centre under Mitanni State, Asyrian Empire, Hellenistic period and Roman Empire. The Upper Tigris Valley has been an archaeologically little-studied region in the Near East until recently. The surveys and excavations ahve intensified recently thanks to another huge water project. The surveys and excavations documenting the cultural heritage within the Ilisu Dam lake continue. The Uctepe Mound rises on the west of the dam lake and it was formnerly excavated by Prof. Dr. Veli Sevin and Diyarbakir Museum Directorate. Information gathered from Uctepe as well as those from ongoing projects will certainly contribute greatly to the regional culture.
