Selahattin Giz’s Istanbul or the long-forgotten mysteries of Istanbul...
Selahattin Giz’s photographs, taken between 1925 and 1955 in different parts of Istanbul and during different seasons, depict familiar streets, famous landmarks barely recognizable today, aged trams, magnificent mosques whose outlines are visible from afar, and grand structures, mostly gone. Horse-drawn carriages, old wooden mansions jutting out from the Bosphorus... The Maiden's Tower, the fishing boats in the Gulf, the illuminated night view of Istanbul University, the city walls outside the city walls... There are beautiful photographs from all over Istanbul, such as a long-gone Taksim, girls and boys sledding in the snow-covered square, streets covered in snow, people climbing the hills of Dolmabahçe before the stairs, streets that look enlarged and widened due to the lack of cars, boats under the snow, the old pool of Beyazıt, Haydarpaşa Train Station, Küçüksu Pavilion...
