Picasso - Suite Vollard. Gravurler / Engravings / Grabados

When FUNDACION MAPFRE purchased Pablo Picasso's Suite Vollard, the most important series of engravings from first half of the 20th century, in 2008, this was consistent with the identifying traits of our art collection, confirming not only the importance we attribute to works on paper but also our commitment to include the leading Spanish creators from that period in our collection. Furthermore, since the decision coincided with our acquisition of drawings by key artists of the international avant-garde movements -such as Paul Klee, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, Kurt Schwitters and Francis Picabia - it also announced the new direction that our collection had taken.

The Suite Vollard is one of the great artworks of the 20th century. Its plates reveal the very best of Picasso, the artist who by then had won international acclaim and was awTare of every novelty, but who was able to imbue his creations with a personal, recognisable style that transcended specialised circles and was identified by the public at large - the Picasso who was not only a painter but also a reputed sculptor, ceramist and engraver. These plates contain a compendium of the recurring themes in his oeuvre - love, violence, the difficulties of artistic creation - arranged in a crescendo that culminates in an iconography very similar to that of Guernica.
